Guilty Pleasures: Harbor Freight

Yes, I’m alive. Indeed, I’m almost half-way finished milling my Tomix EF81 frame. More on that later.

I suppose that I am not supposed to like Harbor Freight, since their business solely involves importing cheaply made Chinese goods. Yet, I do. Today, I walked in with a short list of things to buy, and a reasonable budget. I walked out with more things than were on my list, and money left over.

On that list were a rotary tool and a light-duty vise. The “Hobby Vise” is half the price of Micro-Mark’s closest match, just as versatile, and appears at least as solidly built. The suction-cup holder is so strong, I fear it might be damaging the table it’s attached to.

On the other hand, the rotary tool is not even in the same class as a proper Dremel, but I’m finding it sufficient for my light-duty needs—especially since the Dremel alone would have consumed almost my entire tool budget.

So…hooray for Harbor Freight.

  • Being hyper-sensitive to dangling participles, I couldn’t help but notice your implication that you are an importer of cheaply made Chinese goods.

  • HAHAHA! I might leave that one in, being very funny. :D

You signed up just to say that? You are no fun at all. Actually, I’m just slightly surprised you read this blog—boring as it is to the non-modeler. But then, I guess I don’t really update my other blogs much anymore.

  • The beauty of RSS is that one can “read” a lot of blogs that one is only marginally interested in, on the off chance that something interesting comes up. And, though the technical aspects of the model-building don’t interest me much, I like to see that you’re making progress.
