Kitbashing a Power Supply

Time to catch you up on what I’ve bee doing lately.

Homebrew power supply

Homebrew power supply

The title is something of a mixed metaphor, but it will serve. An important step for installing a ton of LEDs into a layout is having a solid power supply. So a couple of weeks ago, I converted an old ATX power supply from a dead PC into something that I could use. The advantage of going this route is that at the cost of a little work and some cheap components, I get a rock-solid 3.3V/5V/12V regulated supply that can pump out 5-18A (!!) (Depending on the voltage). The downside is that I had to first become comfortable with the idea of performing surgery on a device covered in labels reading “Warning! Don’t mess with the contents of this thing! You will most likely kill yourself!” Turns out that the conversion is pretty easy to do without killing yourself, and now I have enough power available to light my entire apartment!

Tomorrow: What this beast will be powering.
