My family’s Christmas, er, New Year’s layout, Shogatsu, has been retired for the year. We haul it out of the basement for only a couple months each year, around New Year’s, to work on it and display it. This year’s time is up. We made some small progress on it, especially in forestation and village construction. New concrete retaining walls were built, and our village received a bath-house, a liquor store, a long string of merchant stalls for the New Year’s festival, and a portable shrine being hauled down the main street. It also received a new bit of rolling stock, a Tomytec モ1030.
Before we packed it up last weekend, I made a video of it, below.
Great Video! Lighting was perfect, video was synched wtih the audio, the quality – the lack of shaky handheld shots! – was inspiring!
On top of that, you really captured the layout well and were able to give a lot of perspective on it! Hard to believe its not bigger given all the great shots you provided! (BTW the layout looks great too!)
Thank you Quinntopia! Your words are very kind, and very appreciated. I worried that you were getting maybe two views over and over again, but perhaps it only looks like that to me? It is a tiny layout!
Lighting was terrible; the colors would be much better if there were more light in the room. The whole thing is lit with just a floor lamp! (You can see it at the very end of the video poking into the frame). We struggle always to get enough light into that room.
The video synching was happy coincidence, largely (but not entirely ;D ). And the lack of shaky-cam? Totally a tripod. I can’t recommend a tripod enough!
No, in fact, like I said, even though I sort of knew the size of your layout, the way you framed all of the different shots was very creative and definitely made me feel like this was a large layout.
I actually like the lighting. It has a nice ambient effect that I thought gave a very ‘twilight’ feel to the images (not the goofy movie, the time of day just after the sun sets!), and I also am tired of seeing videos using fluorescent lighting! Its one of my pet peeves!
I just watched it again…really nice!
Hear. Hear. I watched it again too.
Very nice vid. Like Jerry said: good framing, good synchronisation and good lighting.
This layout might be small but I find it makes a good job increasing the track length.
Thanks, all! I’m very glad that you enjoyed the video. I’m not one to make a lot of videos, but perhaps I’ll try harder in the future
